At the western Edge of New South Wales there is a very small town - Silverton where MAD MAX was filmed. Quite a number of the cars used were left there.
It's out past Broken Hill. An interesting place to visit if you ever get the chance.

You're thinking of Mad Max 2 (Road Warrior).
The original Mad Max was filmed around Melbourne. It just came out on DVD in Australia a few days ago.
