A Conversation for 'Watchmen' - the Graphic Novel

the blue pootle

I love The Watchmen - I strayed upon it by accident in a book shop and had to finish it.

I don't really know a lot about other graphic novels. Leaving out the Supermans, Batmans, etc., are there other graphic novels of a similar calibre out there that I am missing? All recommendations gratefully received!

Leaving out Batman? But that means you don't get "The Dark Knight Returns". You HAVE to read that, and while doing so remember it was written before Tim Burton ever got his hands on the bat.

You should also check out "The Killing Joke", another excellent pre-Tim Burton Batman tale and a MUCH better "origin" story for the Joker than the weak tale told in the first Burton Batman movie.

Both of these you should read even if you don't think much of Batman.

There are other Batman stories worth a look, but since you expressly asked for other stuff, onto others...

Graphic epic, more like - Sandman, by Neil Gaiman. There's a hell of a lot of it, so you might have to buy one or two at a time. But you will have to buy them all.

Plus you'll need to read "Death: the high cost of living" and "Death: the time of your life".

Alan Moore's V for Vendetta is dark and depressing, but a very good read.

"Shattered Visage", a Prisoner graphic novel, is full of nice touches if you like that sort of thing.

The Herodotus File is good if you can get hold of it - an Aeon Flux book. Again, you need to like Aeon Flux already, I think.

That should keep you going for a while... smiley - cheers

Hopefully someone will come along in a while and recommend some Marvel stuff - I'm very much a DC reader, for some reason smiley - erm

Hoo. (Am slightly confused why you not only changed your name to the default but also kept your initial).
Sandman by Neil Gaiman is pretty much genius. It starts off mediocre and only gets better. The two Death books are less metaphysical, but still great. Only, you missed out Neil Gaiman and Dave McKean's "Mr. Punch", a wonderfully dark psychological fantasy about a young boy, and "Violent Cases", pretty much ditto, and "Signal to Noise", another muse-filled script filled with speculations on Armageddon and information theory.
But then again, I do think that Gaiman is the best writer in the language right now, so you could just ignore this.

I read V For Vendetta. That was quite a disappointment. Some terrorist in a strange costume does vandalism against a fascist goverment. And that was basicaly all that happened. Did I miss out on some big secret hidden meaning of that?
