Wonderful idea,would it be possible to cut the apple in half crossways not top to bottom,then carve a long spiral channel from the centre to the outside thus creating a greater cooling effect on the smoke.The two halves could be rejoined using 30 feet of very fine stainless steel wire and sewing carefully round the edge.Two or three brass rivets top to bottom would complete the job,care would have to be taken when inserting the rivets to avoid the aforementioned groove other wise you would need to suck very hard*.Any air leaks round the join could be stopped using apple repair paste,followed by bitumastic paint which you can get in apple green,(this would render the apple inedible)
*This was possibly where they got the idea for the link after your entry about apples being good for you lungs.
