We've just returned from walking the 
during which we met an old gentleman and stopped to chat. I commented that the blackberries are much more plentiful this year, they seem to have started early, and they're still 'hanking' in the hedgerows now. In fact, we picked some good punnet-fulls yesterday.
He replied " in a 
-like manner. (Well, this is A6672468 !!) by rights, we shouldn't have been able to pick blackberries since 29th September, since this is Michaelmas Day and by legend, the day the Devil spits on them on this day, and makes them inedible".
