OK I figured that out after about three chapters in book one, even without noticing the references to John Glenn or the Mercedes-Benz logo. My main clue was when Thom mentioned he would tell stories about 'when men lived among the stars.' Kinda had to happen.
There's another bit in book 5 when Rand is in Rhuidean and he sees a stained glass window of a woman in complicated blue robes, whose face looks both strn and loving, and whose hand is raised as if to bless or halt. This seems an awful lot like the Virgin Mary (Hey, being raised Catholic finally pays off!)
