A Conversation for Great Islands
Symi Island

A little slice of heaven in the Aegean Sea, well more a dot really. Symi is a most beautiful island in all it's rugged glory. Pretty little houses of varying colours dance their way up the steep hillsides on three sides of a beautiful natural harbour. The sunlight twinkles on the gentle sea. The locals are friendly and welcoming and give you a feeling that somehow you belong to this tiny community. There are lovely tavernas and a few bars to be social but only one night club which the local lads frequent. Noise laws are strict and music will not go on after 12 midnight. It's not a place for the yob culture but for people who enjoy natural beauty in an intimate atmosphere and great food. There are a few beaches mainly stoney but you can escape to a sandy beach by water taxi, however, it's not a holiday for the beach lover, but for those who like to explore especially if you have a certain creative flair. You can learn to paint watercolours, enhance your creativity through writing with the best inspiration supplied for you on a plate! The views are tremendous from the top of the hillside over the bays below, and it's just a pleasure to wander about the little stepped lanes of the village of Chorio which rests in a blend of charming dilapidation and beautiful restoration over looking the picture perfect bays. If you can find the energy for a bit of an uphill climb, the views from the Citadel are the best around overlooking three bays, but make sure you take your panoramic camera!
