A Conversation for Great Islands

Nora - back from the Dublin meet!

This is a small, inhabited island off the coast of Georgia. You can get there by a small ferry, which also takes the kids to school on the mainland. A lot of the island is woodland, with Spanish moss and all the trappings of a Southern (largely pine) forest. There are campsites, and you can go kayaking or swimming. There must be a kayak rental, because I'm sure we didn't bring our own. I'm sorry I can't remember it more clearly, because I had a lovely time there. Watch out for mosquitos and ticks, as well as sand fleas at the beach.

I don't know. smiley - blush I've heard of Cumberland, but neither of them are labelled in my atlas. As far as I remember, Sapelo is one of the northerly islands in the chain.

Well, Sapelo's just south of Savannah, according to Yahoo Maps. Where's Cumberland?

I think it is a little further south. It's is supposed to be very beautiful and wild. They even have wild horses on the island. A friend of mine went there about 8 yrs ago and had a wonderful time. I think it may be camping only.

Neat!

Reminds me of the Marguerite Hendry books - the wild ponies of Chincoteague, up in the Carolinas.

I think i read those when i was little, and you're right..very similar landscape. I don't think cumberland is very inhabited though. I used to love reading books about horse when I was little. Did you ever read one called "Can I Get There By Candelight"?

I don't know. It sounds familiar, but I can't figure out whether I've read it or just seen it. Who's it by?

Even though I used to pretend to ride Misty, the pony in most of the Hendry books, my favourite wasn't one about her, but 'Brighty of the Grand Canyon'. I was too old for 'Saddle Club' and all the later horse series - trying to remember what else I read.

wow, i don't remeber who it was by. that was like 15 yrs ago at least. it was a neat book though, for a ten yr old. i also remember one about two sisters that owned a horse farm that was really good, but i can't even remember the name of that one. i do rememeber misty though. did you ever see the movie Sylvester?

No, and I didn't read 'Candlelight' either, more's the pity. I just looked it up on Amazon - it's by Jean Slaughter Doty, and the plot sounds great but not familiar. I did read a good time travel book, which was called something like 'Timeslip', but it didn't have a horse in it.

What's Sylvester about?

It's a really good movie about a this horse, Sylvester, and the girl who rides him. I really hate to give anything away..not that it is all that complex a plot, I'm just one of those people that doesn't like to watch previews. Anyway, the girl is growing up on a cattle farm with her two little brothers and the old man who takes care of them when they discover that Sylvester can jump really high, it turns into a carrer for sylvester as a cross country jumper.
