The other way to be a vinyl junkie i guess is to make music from them. Basically, to be DJ Shadow or the avalanches

...and forgotten was the very rare, very odd, and most weird of the vinal junkies... the 18 year old brat who wasn't even alive when he favorite bands were big, but she still wants 'em all on vinyl! Posting this is one of this type.

No, the young 'uns who are after stuff on Vinyl all the time are included (I'm one as well, I'm only 24) though I put the Vinyl down as the cause for liking bands that were around before I was even born, cos I had to buy it due to not being able to afford CDs and tapes and new music in general. Plus I don't know enough about the obssessive sampling nuts that Unc was on about to be authoratative on it (or spell properly)

...but I don't fall under that catagory you listed in there. I didn't get hooked on this stuff 'cause it was on vinyl, it was the other way around. I got hooked on vinyl 'cause of the stuff I listen to

theres a time and a place for old music: the past.

There's also a time and a place for the majority of contemporary music, in the bin, right now!

I think its a bit harsh to say that old music belongs in the past.
After all look at half of the crap the radio's play these days. Most of todays music contains samples of older stuff anyway! cheesed up for todays pop addicted kids, good music, is good music. anybody can make a song now, you dont even have to be able to sing!

Dont get me wrong, there are some really good bands out at the moment, but most of the stuff is just S%*t.
I think you just have something against the Beatles,
There was more than one good bad in past days.

Thousands upon thousands of them. The Who, The Residents, The White Noise, King Crimson, Roy Harper, The Dead Kennedys just to name what I've listened to in the last 24 hours. Whereas in the last 12 months the only two new albums I've liked have been by the Strokes and The White Stripes. Though I do like what The Avalanches are doing as well.

...and what's your problem with the Beatles? I may just hav'ta come out of retirement on mt. olympus and kick your behind for that offence unc And if you ask me, there isn't much of anything that's any good out anymore. And you're talking to an 18 year old who wasn't even alive when all the stuff she listens to was first released. So bah to you!

nothing annoys me than the rampant goldenageism going on. its ancestor worship! the beatles were good for their time! they were innovators! today they are boringboringboring!
and if you say 'all modern music is bad' you are guilty of making sweeping unfounded and frankly rubbish statements. your just not trying.

Point me in the direction of some good new music then Unc, I always like to hear different stuff (New Residents album coming out this year, WOOHOO! and a collection of their more ear-friendly stuff too)

I didn't say all of it was bad, I just said there isn't much that's good.
And music, unlike technology does not get outdated. One can continue to appriciate it even if the group isn't still together! Why do you think people still listen to classical? But your way of thinking, all that music should be gone, no more than a ground work of ideas that helped lead to the stuff currently here. It's kinda like saying the original Star Trek series sucked, and it was only around to lay down the idea for all the series that came after.

good new music? i can name loads...but accounting for your music taste, probably not so much. albums ive really enjoyed recently include see this through and leave by the cooper temple clause, BRMC by black rebel motorcycle club, and hot shots II by the beta band.
all brilliant. all released this or last year
the fatc is that there is loads of good music still being brought out. if you live in the past out of some spurious desire to remain pure or exclusive, you are missing out, quite frankly.
to me music does get dated. most of the music of the sixties, like the beatles is, for me, boring. some of their stuff (eleanor rigby, duh) is really good still today. the ones where they get a couple of chords and repeat three lyrics (love me do, all you need is love etc) are dull as you like.
this said, i own sseveral old albums and want to own more.
i have a pixies best of, a kinks best of...and some other bests of which my hungover brain cannot recall. i also really like stuff like the clash/jam/jesus and mary chain/specials etc. so nah.
basically, you cannot dismiss new music

Hooray for the Clash! Good choice Unc (yeah, I forgot the Beta band, they are pretty good actually). And I actually agree with you about the early Beatles stuff, it is pretty crappy, always preferred the Stones anyway.

Uncle Heavy [sic] Posted Mar 18, 2002
so would i, if they were actually able to write good songs. which they're not.
oh, and the first series of star trek *was* intensely sucky.
all the other series were sucky to, you understand, but not to the extreme degree of the first lot.
