I visited Fray Bentos a few years back. It's situated in a nice location looking across the river towards Argentina. The town itself is now a little run down, following the collapse of it's largest industry. The former meat factory is enormous, but now sits mostly in ruins. It was a pleasant spot to while away an afternoon though.

For many years I hadn't actually associated the words 'Fray Bentos' with a real place. It was just a brand. What you've written is strangely evocative, the once thriving factory in ruins. Thanks for posting that Ballynac.

If you go to http://phehir.smugmug.com/ and check out my photo gallery on Uruguay. Pages 9&10 of the gallery are of Fray Bentos.

Love the photos, Ballynac. I've read about the place, but your photography really brings it to life.
