I can remember going there to see a concert many years ago. Do people still play the Whitley bay ice rink?

Damn, I knew there was something else I meant to put in there 
To be honest, I don't think anyone plays there anymore (not larger bands, anway). They tend to go for Newcastle Arena instead.

Ah that'll be why then.
Lets see it was back in the early 90's and I went up there as I had a friend at Durham and we went to see Kiss play the ice rink. I've still got the drumstick I caught somewhere...

Early 90s sounds about right - the Arena opened in 1995. I don't think any band the size of Kiss would be seen dead in Whitley Bay now 
I saw ACDC at the Arena and it all seemed a bit sterile...

Shepherd's Bush Empire is where I've seen gigs most recently. It's about as dark and dingy as the Ice Rink was, though probably warmer
