A Conversation for UK Roundabouts: A Cyclist's Guide

Easiest if you are already a driver

As a driver who also cycles I have found that if I behave as if I were in the car when on the bike and obey the Highway Code (NB UK centric) I have few or no problems when cycling.

Drivers may not like you on the bike but they will respect you if you assume a safe and dominant position on the road and quickly get out of their way once you have made a manoeuvre such as turn right or negotiate a roundabout.

Confidence and visibility work for me every time.

Absolutely. If you know how a roundabout works and you are confident about how to approach it, it makes life a lot easier!

The two big dangers if you cycle round the edge are: drivers leaving the roundabout will cut in front of you ("left hook"); drivers joining the roundabout will not notice you (they don't look to their extreme right). So don't go near the outer edge until you are approaching your own exit.

Indeed. Cycling around the edge unless you are tuning left seems like madness to me!

I think that was discussed when this was in PR: keeping to the left is the advice of the Highway Code which I'm guessing was written by someone who doesn't cycle much.

Great work Vip.
