I agree that in the night you must use lights to be visible, and that reflectors also help, but in the daytime what is actually required is to be larger than a medium-sized concrete block.
Drivers are very good at avoiding these. Most drivers also manage to avoid kittens and small dogs, and even bottles and paper bags.
Being a recumbent bike rider, I am constantly reminded by friends of the danger of my low profile. On the contrary, the unusual look of my bike means I am noticed much more than I was in my upright days.

That is true. I've seen people swerve for much smaller things than me.
Having only encountered one recumbent bike as a driver, I certainly took more notice because it was unusual.
