Don't forget New Kids on the Block... does anyone still remember them.... I hate to admit that I do... I hate even more to admit that I used to like them (Hey, give me a break. I was in the 3rd grade. What did I know?)

Ah, yes but - those 'artists' that you mention don't actually fail, do they? They've gone about it all wrong. OK, so what they do is to a large extent derivative, talentless and shallow, but they do it so well that they fail to fail (so to speak) and end up succeeding.

whilst I agree with all that has been said already. I suspect that the horrible truth is that it sells! (How does it sell?)
Programmes like pop idol are dangerous because they shun all signs of musicality or originaity, they are looking for `singers` to behave not unlike clones. They dont want the artists to control the music in any way, in many cases they are salaried. The record companies use stylists to carefully control image, this along with the imput from their songwriters, mean that young people are carefully sucked in.I may just be getting old and cynical, but I feel like screaming when my 7 year old talks about atomic kitten or sclub 7. who are after all just `singers `who display huge egos whilst singing a song on cd;uk. I Feel like screaming!!!!
