Apparently, it's an actual caffeine solution which has been found to be very effective against slugs, see the short report from Nature

I assume the grounds would have traces of caffeine still, and slugs also dislike trailing over grit, but I don't think the effect of coffee has been proved, though it certainly sounds likely.

Well it's going to have to wait till next summer, but I think I'm going to have to try researching that a bit further.

Oh yea, Mint is a very good bug repellant, grind some up and put it around the bugs entrance into your house and Presto, you have ant repellant!

My solution for slugs is to put out a dish of beer at night where they seem to be a problem.
THey seem to all get together for one big beer binge voluntarily getting pissed literally to death.
It seems to be relatively humane I guess. But it is extremely effective.

I guess slugs would be discouraged by drinking instant coffee much as I would. I'd rather listen to Vogon poetry than drink instant coffee.

AGREED! Though I happen to like vrogon poetry, it is like a slime postule waiting to burst...
