Shoe repairers in the Royal Navy and Royal Marines are still known as "Snobs"

Hi Bingalau, and welcome to h2g2.
I didn't know the word had survived in Navy slang - that's fascinating. I have a couple of Navy friends and rapidly lose the thread of the conversation when they start talking.
I just looked it up in Covey Crump's list of Navy slang on the Royal Navy website:
http://www.royalnavy.mod.uk/training-and-people/rn-life/navy-slang/covey-crump-a-to-aye/
Interestingly, it lists 'Snob' as "Naval name for a boat-repairer". Did you ever hear it used as that?
