I always try to deal tactfully with problem people. After all if it doesn't work, you can always try more confrontational methods later, but if you immediately react by using such tactics it means you can't effectively try the 'nice guy' approach afterwards.
Perhaps the best method is the 'avoid and evade' method. After all, why deal with all that hassle if it isn't absolutely neccessary? Let the problem person be an SEP.

Totally agree. I'll smile and walk away if I can. If I can't, well, there's always the finger. 
By the way, what's an SEP?

Make them, as you said, SEP.
