A Conversation for Pencils
0.9 mm pencils

Howdy! I have a mechanical pencil with a 0.9 mm lead. It is my favorite. I use HB in it, but I believe other leads are available, including H, B and F. What is F? Am I hallucinating?

F? I have absolutely no idea. If I knew about it it'd have gone in the Entry.
Hmm... this is most odd. What make is it? It could be a proprietary thing, although I doubt it somehow. And a 0.9mm lead isn't all that common either for a propelling pencil I believe... most have 0.5mm leads don't they?

I also have one with .9mm leads, but I prefer the .5 version.

My 0.9 mm pencil is a Draftmatic made by the Alvin Co. I have seen other 0.9 mm pencils, including one made by Pentel.

Oh I've seen them too, but not very often outside of shops...

How should I know? Did you look in Staples? Heffers Art Shop? Oh, that won't be cheap.
Umm... did you ask Mum and Dad? Jill? Kevin? Anyone?

I use a .3mm pencil (bought from an art shop which is now closed) with a 2B lead (it helps when trying to mark tiny dips and strikes on a map in the rain/fog/snow/wind in wales). Most universities have shops selling pencils with thin leads.

I too have a 9mm pencil. In fact I have seven, my current favourite is made by Faber Castell. I also have some F leads that were bought in Tescos in Prague, so maybe it's an Eastern European sort of thing.
