Greetings!
Welcome to my own little bit of paradise, on BBC servers!
I am a charming man, who lives in Newark, Delaware, USA. Newark is a small town where the University of Delaware is located. Delaware is one of the smaller states in the USA. Delaware is mainly suburban, with a couple of more urban districts in the state's biggest city, Wilmington.
I am on the staff of a small democratic school, and that is quite an experience. A college friend founded the school in the fall of 1995, and I have been involved from the beginning. At our school, children are free to do as they will -- to learn, to play, to loiter, to think. A.S. Neill founded Summerhill in England years ago, with the same idea: that children deserve respect, and that they should have the main say in how they are educated.
I am an avid musician and singer. When I was in high school, I played a variety of brass instruments in marching and concert bands. Since that time, I have added recorder, and three years ago I began learning guitar. The only regret I have as an adult is that I did not begin guitar when I was in my teens or my twenties. I am most interested in traditional music, especially traditional folksongs and ballads.
I am quite interested in mathematics, especially numbers. I have always loved discovering patterns in numbers: the first pattern I noticed was that the digits of multiples of 9 always add up to 9. I first noticed that pattern in 4th grade, and I thought I was the first person ever to see the pattern -- ah, the disappointment!
My undergraduate training was at St. John's College in Annapolis, Maryland, USA. This college is radically traditional in approach: every undergraduate takes the same course of studies in an all-required curriculum. The curriculum is based on the great books in the western tradition and the pedagogy is based on conversation and dialogue.
