True. That also. One of Jung Chang's points in her biography of Mao (published after I'd finished the entry) is that Mao was wholly in thrall to Stalin and was prepared to sacrifice all to support the Soviet cause.
Of course...the selling off of food for profit is a common cause of famine, whether it be Ireland in the '49, Bengal in 1944...or the contemporary cash cropping in the 3rd world.
