I'd still like to moan about footnote 2. Do we really need to provide definitions for basic vocabulary?

I'd agree--it's a bit jarring, to say the least. I wouldn't quite count 'quixotic' as basic vocabulary, but I'd expect anyone who doesn't know what it means to look it up for themselves.

smiley - applause Great entry, anyway!

RFJS__ - trying to write an unreadable book, finding proofreading tricky

I'm more concerned about 'a beacon of modernist modernity'; I think I can roughly work out the meaning, but wouldn't 'modernism' have done?

As for 'outwith'... I checked the PR thread, Googled, looked at http://www.bloomfield.me.uk/entries/000676.htm , and still won't be using it. If any word needed an explanatory footnote it's that one, for dictionary.com knows it not.

For some reason the 'Hai' in 'Hai Rui Dismissed from Office' has been de-italicised, and the closing quotation mark has gone while the opening one remains.smiley - erm

But apart from those niggles, nice Entry.smiley - ok

'Modernist Modernity'! smiley - blush
That's why we have sub-eds smiley - winkeye

I always use 'outwith' as a deliberate provocation. It's perefectly standard Scots English and is even included in official documents. I try to use it at least once in anything written for an English audience. The OED lists it as 'archaic'. Their Edinburgh rival, Chambers, lists it without comment.
