... is how the garage owners round our way have got around that semantic difficulty.
Is it some legal issue that makes people write this? Ie if they just write 'no parking' it's a matter of opinion, but if they write 'gates in...' then we are obliged not to from by law number 273 subsection 2? I've often wondered.

I suppose if it's a commercial/industrial site, maybe they want you to know that they sometimes work late? I don't think legality comes into it with these scrawled notices.

I think it was the fact that it's frequently clearly privately owned spaces that do it. I thought perhaps there was a special magic phrase one had to write if one wanted to be able to actually rather than morally shout at the numpty in your garage driveway.

In 2006, a TV Celebrity was fined for parking across her own driveway in the Sydney suburb of Waverly
http://www.news.com.au/dailytelegraph/story/0,22049,20677429-5006009,00.html
In her defence she didn't use the "But it's MY driveway!" approach, but rather that the difficulties of parking in the drive and unloading shopping and baby were too much for a new mother to cope with (quote "a new mother can only do sooo much" unquote).
Her appeal was rejected.
