There is a fundimental need in all of us to believe in something greater than ourselves. Atheists look to science for the explaination and reject anything which they believe to be supernatural. Theists look to a Supernatural being and reject scientific research.
The idea of god/gods etc. arrose from the need to explain nature and the cycles of life. The study of the stars revealed a patern of movement that coresponded to certain cycles of life. The Sun, not only gave us night and day but the seasons as well. The Moon, because of its 28 day cycle became identified with women but, 'though not all cultures made the Moon a goddess, most did.
Seeing that the Sun has a major affect on our lives, you'd expect it to have the No.1 spot amongst the gods but it doesn't, that place went to Jupiter who was also called Jove (N.B. The sound of Jove and Jehovah is not accidental).
The Sanskrit word 'jiva' means 'the life force' and there is an association with Jupiter(Jyua + Pitr) God the Father.

While there are a few sweeping assumptions in that post, I thought the most important and definitely wrong one was this:
"Theists ... reject scientific research."
Surely you've seen enough disproof of this during your time here?
Proof
alji's Posted Jul 3, 2003
It depends who and what you are talking about!
There are scientists who are theists but they reject evidence which is contrary to their belief system.
What are the other sweeping assumptions/statements you think are wrong?

I don't turn to science- I turn to death.
Why do Satan worshipers and wiccans get a bum deal from society? After all, God said love your neighbour...

Alji, I cannot agree that theists reject scientific research! I am a Christian, and a big fan of science fiction - which means I am also a big fan of science, and very interested! (Especially astronomy, though I cannot match your expertise in that area...

Yes, God did say 'Love your neighbour', but that doesn't mean agreeing with everything she says and does! Does such people as you mention *really* get a bum deal from society any more, that much?

Matthew 5:44
But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;
Archeology has shown that at the time of Jesus there was no city of Nazareth, no town of Nazareth but there may have been a small village around a well at Nazareth.
See 'The vow of a Nazirite' @ http://www.nazarite.com/scripture.htm
And 'JESUS HAD SHORT HAIR @ http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Troy/5043/Shorthair.html
Why did Paul believe long hair was shamefull?
Could it be because Paul was a Roman and not familiar with the vow of the Nazirite?
How did Paul know that Jesus had short hair; he had never seen him in the flesh?

THis thread has degenerated into Drivel.
One point though - Atheists do not reject anything that is supernatural if it can be explained without reference to forces that are outside of science.
Similarly, Theists do not reject science otherwise they would not use computers or any of the other scientific advances of the modern age.
