There are quite a few women bass players. Most basses have keys on at least some of the holes. I have fairly small hands r a man and can play the bass quite happily. I would suggest anyone learning to learn both the descant and alto fingerings. The tenor and bass are just the same.

True, but bass music is usually written in Bass clef while Alto (Treble) music is written in Treble clef.
The soprano (descant) and the tenor, on the other hand, are written exactly the same, as soprano music is written an octave lower than it sounds.
