Does anyone know why lower recorder holes are doubled?

Gnomon - time to move on

So that you can play C# and D#. These were virtually impossible to play on 18th century recorders because they had single holes. You had to exactly half cover the hole to get these notes. Instead of that, we have it easy, being able to cover one of the two holes.
