Essentials

Well, what is always helpful to bring along is someone that knows where the heck your destination is; needless hours are usually spent, trying to find a certain lugar, when you're not at all familiar with the area.

Other things that are extremely helpful are:

ºwater
ºan extra pair of shoes
ºtraveler's cheques
ºclean underwear

Water, needed when venturing into 3rd world countries, or French restaurants smiley - winkeye

Shoes... well, there are far too many reasons for bringing an extra pair.

Traveler's Cheques... because they need an authorized signature and some form of ID in order to be cashed

Clean underwear... well, because first impressions always last

Sol

If you are going to Russia in the summer it is absolutely essential to take the heaviest duty mosquito spray you can find (they aren't malarial, just damm annoying). In winter, a pair of rubber-soled boots. Not DM's. The soles are plastic and you fall over every five seconds.

Yes, exactly. Very wise. Electric mozzie-blasters, mozzie coils, mozzie spray. Apparently one can even buy sonic mozzie deterents that make an ultrasonic 'WHhEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE' noise making the mozzies think that Dolly Parton is in concert and therefore they make 'other plans'.
