My first trip on Indian railways was the last time I tried Indian Train Food - extraordinarily unpalatable vegetable curries. Now I'm not saying they were bad or fowl or too hot - my companion (grew up there) absolutely loved them.
Following this my on-train eating (for those 57 hour journeys) was limited to what I took on and what I could buy on the platforms.
What you could buy on the platforms was marvellous. Little clay cups of chai (spiced sugared milky tee) 1 Rupee (2 pence), keep the cup. Bananas - YAWN. And absolute delight, hunger killer, for 10 Rupees (20 pence!) Omelette sandwich. Fried up on the platform outside your train window, indian sweetened white bread, and a one egg omelette flecked with wicked chillis. Gorgeous.

That brings back memories
One word of advice to people buying things on Indian stations; if you're buying Pakoras (fried blobs of stuff wrapped round some edible object; generaly delicious and possibly something I ought to write a guide entry about), check carefuly what's in them. My first purchase on an Indian railway platform was a bag of chilli pakoras. Oh well; I only wasted Rs2/-
