Perhaps the recipe was invented in Austria, but the Spätzle translate as 'swabian dumplings' wherever they come from. The question is quite similar to the arguments between the French and Italians over who actually invented the pizza.
Hmm... Graukas? I have never seen this kind, but have to admit I never looked for it

The invention of Spätzle indicates their Swabian derivation:
