Although the four Celtic symbols of cauldron, spear, sword and stone have been associated with Christ (holy grail, sword that pierced Christ's side etc) they date from before the time of Christ. In the spread of Christianity, preachers often rewrote the old tales and converted the old gods into saints of the new religion, to persuade people that the change to the new religion was not that big a jump.
The four symbols were also used as the four suits on the first playing cards, the tarot pack.
