Matt, this is terrific.
At the mention of Rabelais - it occurred to me to see what there is in the Edited Guide about the codpiece. You will be as alarmed as I was, I'm sure, to learn that there's nothing.
"What?! No codpiece?" you are probably exclaiming even now.
I mention this only in case you are at loose ends and need another slightly rude topic to write about.

Dear Matt,
Very good explication of an action which I often used to practise when a young schoolgirl!. Is it therefore a generational gesture.?
Now I confine the gesture to two kinds of screens - computer and TV. !!
Surely male dancers wear codpieces? I have always believed that they did. !
Anyway, I shall be interested to know when, where and why they were introduced.
