Thanks Pin for another excellent article.
I knew about the fires when I toured York Minster and was impressed by the magnificent job they did restoring the building. It is a wonderful example of craftsmanship and love joining forces to accomplish an enormous task. I also thoroughly enjoyed the exhibit in the undercroft showing the different levels of occupation of the site.
As for Jonathan Martin, I agree with the jury that he belonged in an asylum. Religious mania certainly took a destructive turn in his case.

Thanks Hyp
The Minster certainly is among the most imposing buildings in England.
Did you get any further up the map than York? I ask because another American friend described the Minster as the last thing worth seeing in Britain, going north.
I thought that was a little unfair. She's from Delaware; perhaps that explains it.

No, Pin, just to York. But that statement seems a bit harsh. Especially from someone from Delaware.
Actually, I liked the north very much. My next trip - if there is one - I shall skip the south and concentrate on the north. I thought York was interesting and wish I could have seen more of it. And I'd like to see some of the old monasteries. And see Yorkminster again, of course.
Another thought is to do a cathedral tour. Start with Salisbury and work my way north.

Obviously that person didn't get anywhere near Durham, then.
Nice article, by the way.

Thanks!
Probably not that near, no.
I seem to recall that she wasn't impressed by Hadrian's Wall, or Loch Ness.
Key: Complain about this post
