Entry: A (Brief) History of the Post-it Note - A9179445 Author: Sho [42] - footinooti - for goodness sakes! - U129860 Hello! Right, this is complicated so please pay attention, I'll be asking questions afterwards! This has been moved out of PR because it's a Flea Market rescue of an Update to an Edited Entry. Relevant conversations are here Most recent PR thread: http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/classic/F48874?thread=2594396&skip=0&show=20 The Flea Market rescue (although it is, in fact, an almost complete re-write) is of: A5036771 An Idea Worthy of a Post-it Note by U1673842 ENeerg - aka Whomever Which in its turn is an update of: A416404 Post-it Notes by U107501 Alaska

and, for those who prefer to do this than gouge out their own eyes with a pastry fork the original PR thread for the update of Alaska's entry is here http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/classic/F2368936?thread=798085 Having been PRd to within an inch of it's life I'd dare to say this one is ready to go... *pulls on tin hat*

OK, but now I've read the instructions again, I'd prefer this in PR...

It is a complete rewrite.

what to do?

well, the first person to reply said that they would put it as an Update, but then I read the part about rewrites...

*shrugs*
I'm feeling too grumpy today to do anything constructive, so this is probably not the place to be.

okay, I'm going to post this just so I think I know what's going on - if I've got the wrong end of the stick smiley - sorry

You took an Entry from the Flea Market yes? Right, so Flea Market Rescues should credit the orginal author and go through PR for later inclusion in the Guide. Which is what you did. smiley - ok

BUT -

There is also the EG Entry that you want to Update?

So in a round about way, unfortunately it seems you do have to go through both processes - that is put your Flea Market Rescue into both Peer Review AND the Update Forum. smiley - sadface

HOWEVER -

Saying that, it's been through PR and everyone has commented on it and if it were a normal Flea Market Rescue it'd be ripe for a Scout to pick. So all that needs to be done now is to make sure you state that the Entry now here in the Update Forum is an update of the one in the EG, and because it's already been Peer Reviewed should just neatly slide over the top of the EG entry, giving you, the author of the Flea Market piece and the contributors to the EG piece credits. smiley - steam

I think. smiley - erm

Jim's might clear it up, but to me all that needs to be done is for this Entry to replace the one in the EG - as an Update. smiley - smiley

Kick me if I've just confused matters...

Basically I don't mind.

I rescued it from FM during that phase I had where I thought I had moaned about the PR process too much and should get my finger out and do something.

As far as that goes, I really don't mind what happens to this.

However, compared to:

a) the original original entry

and

b) the abandoned update

this is almost completely rewritten and very shiny and new

and as such, it had to go through some kind of review process.

I'm not convinced that PR was the right place, but I'm also not convinced that Update is either.

anyway, as I mentioned before, I'm not in the right frame of mind.

I did what Jimster said (and after all, he is the guy who pays us all... in magic beans, isn't i?) so basically I'll leave it up to hootoo to decide.

All updates must go through the Update Forum. I don't think the fact that this is also a FM rescue should change that rule.smiley - ok

I'm subscribed to the Update Forum, and I can't say that I've ever seen anything go to the Flea Market from here....so very strange.

OK, now I have read it.

The majority of the article is about the specific product, the Post-It Note, but nowadays there are competitors. I myself almost never refer to them as Post-It Notes, unless that's what I am specifically referring to. Usually I call them sticky notes. I don't know the author's or the updator's intention here, though.

vocabulary tickers->vocabulary stickers

inherent stickiness subsides->this reads oddly. I've left sticky notes unused in the air for years and they remain sticky. I seems to me that the inherent stickiness remains; only it gets stuck to dust or fabric bits so less adhesive surface is available for subsequent sticks, or it doesn't entirely come up from the surface when you take the sticky note off, or reacts chemically to whatever you may be sticking it to so it becomes less sticky.

Gnomon - time to move on

It doesn't really matter where the entry is from. If it is an update of an existing Edited Entry, it should go through the Update Forum. The author of the original Edited Entry should be credited on it. So should any other authors who contributed along the way.

Gnomon - time to move on

It's a good entry, Sho, it just needs some tidying. Here in the Update Forum, there are no sub-editors, so you have to get it exactly right before the Eds will accept it. That's not difficult.

Typos, grammar points:

acrylate adhesives which is used --> acrylate adhesives which are used

in many of 3Ms sticky tapes --> in many of 3M's sticky tapes

He orginally showed --> He originally showed

reuseable --> re-useable

Footnote number 3 comes after the final full stop of the sentence. It should come before it:

Remove full stop and space before
Add full stop after

Footnote 4 on del *.* looks bad because the 4 doesn't look good on a star. I suggest you move it to the word pressed.

"yellow stickies" --> 'yellow stickies'

I don't think that you need a new paragraph at this point. Combine the single sentence which contains "yellow stickies" with the following paragraph.

to write the name of a logical database entity (equivalent to a physical table) on each Post-it Note
-->
to write the name of each logical database entity (equivalent to a physical table) on a Post-it Note

in the 1980's --> in the 1980s

while they arranged little yellow sticky notes around --> while they moved little yellow sticky notes around

the vocabulary tickers --> the vocabulary stickers

You can keep up-to-date with --> You can keep up to date with

product pallette --> product palette

at the 3M website -- add a full stop.

non-sticky side of the pad5 -- add a full stop after the

Change "3M website" to "3M Post-It website".

Thanks Sea Change. I've made changes because actually, the "inherent stickiness" part was one of the pieces which I kept from the original update smiley - erm

I didn't really want to stamp all over his style, but in the end it seems I did. smiley - sorry

Is this more suitable:

Post-it Notes can be removed from one surface and re-applied to another many times. However they ofte become clogged up with dust, or the glue reacts with whatever it has been stuck to and it is rendered unusable as a sticky note.

As for using the term Post-it for any sticky note... in English I call them all Post-its. In German I call them "gelbe stickies" ... which isn't actually German but people seem to understand me.

Gnomon, thanks - I've dealt with all yours too.

I'm still pondering the Update aspect of this, since it is a rewrite.

Of course, I will do as I am told, because I'm a good little hootooer (but I'll still grumble about it under my breath)
