A Conversation for Lloyd's of London
How we refer to ships
Cheerful Dragon Started conversation Aug 7, 2000
Since time immemorial, ships have been referred to as 'she'. (No, it's not because you spend a lot of money to keep them looking good, they're temperamental and won't do what you want!) A couple of years ago, Lloyds of London tried to be 'politically correct' and change things so that ships are referred to as 'it' instead of 'she'. Nobody wanted to know. In fact, there was virtual 'mutiny' in some quarters. So the Lloyds attempt failed, and ships are still referred to as 'she'.
