India and the Indians often amaze and amuse.
Of all foreign cultures, India more than any other simultaneously delights and confounds
those of us from white western societies.
Now,
whether you call it cyberspace, the world wide web, or just 'the Internet', we all have high hopes of meeting foreigners online and learning about life in exotic locations. For many of us h2g2 seems the most obvious and natural place to do that.
And to some extent it does fulfill that promise even if most of the time it's just UK ex-pats and assorted travelling Yankees who log on from faraway places with strange sounding names. Or the occasional drunk doing an impression of Peter Sellers at 'The Party'.
So it was with great delight we received this week's CAC submission.
To my knowledge there has never before been a real native Indian researcher actually posting from 'the punjab' who was willing to speak to us about what life is really like there.
I can't put my finger on just exactly how or why, but there is a certain 'authenticity' to the writing. The voice I hear between the lines convinces me this is a real Indian and that he really is enjoying the advent of colour television in the sub-continent. His unabashed testimonial is told with what I recognise as east Indian charm, honesty, sincerity and joy. And we felt compelled to share this vision with you, the wider (if not wiser) audience.
