Hey, what about Deep Purple? Founded in '68 I'd reckon that they're on of the pionieers of HM as well; especially if Pink Floyd and Led Zed are termed HM as well. They were called the Loudest Band on Earth for a number of years and the Live Album "Made in Japan" (1972) was even years later voted the best live HM of all times (probably only beaten by the 3-CD set from that tour ). And the albums "In Rock" (1970), "Fireball" (1971) "Machinehead" (1972) (not to mention the three that came out before 1970!)? What about them?

Refer to the other thread in this forum for many oversights that didn't get corrected. Sometimes I hit myself for writing this sub-standard entry (sort of).

If you're going into the roots that deeply, you'd need a lot more space & research. Most of the people who featured in the bands quoted spent most of the sixties as either session musos (Jimmy Paige, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, the late lamented Cozy Powell to name just a few) or in early pop bands.

F'r instance Queen were labelled as Heavy Metal in the early 70's!!

Then there was the American influence, even the term Heavy Metal comes from the song 'Born to be Wild' by Steppenwolf.

Deep Purple should absolutely be added to the entry .. IN LARGE HEAVY LETTERS!!

Seems, as there are some add ons here to help define the roots of HM. Maybe the,Iron Butterfly, The Byrds, Quicksilver Messenger Service, Velvet Underground, Donovan, Santana, Steppen Wolf plus the Stones. Maybe a little Bob Dillon and Joan Baez for flavoring. There is also something that is left out of this recipe, drugs and the Vietnam War. Rebellion was the happening. Rebel from parental control. Rebel from authority, civic responsibility (Vietnam), seek pleasure, sex and drugs.

The drugs of choice, pot, LSD, heroin and speed. Stay stoned was a motto of some. With LDS and the Acid sound you could feel color, taste sound, fly the universe, hide in a musical note all at once. The artist Peter Maxx painted his LDS trips as an example. To hide in drugs was a cowards way of rebelling. Never to be responsible for a job, a pregnant girlfriend or anything else.

I appreciated the music and still do. I paid for my freedom and the freedom of many other people with what I had to do, just to stay alive. Today a new group of talented people, with similar excuses, share the same music and the same intestinal fortitude. The Music is still just as intoxicating.

Surely labelling bands is half the problem- I like some HM and some heavy rock, blues reggae, jazz, all sorts of stuff- who cares what it's called as long as it's good? A lot of punk is pretty heavy and shares a lot of characteristics of HM for example.
(PS. I know nothing about music- I just listen to it! Oh yes- some HM fans have long hair and no girlfriends- they are called women

How about mentioning the guy who brought speed into the mix, Dick Dale? The King of the Surf Guitar introduced double-picking to popular music. Remember the theme song to 'Pulp Fiction', "Miserlou"? That stuff predated Cream, and definitely tweaked a few perceptions.
