Dr Strangelove (or how I learned to stop worrying and love the bomb) is a classic example of this phenomenon - realeasing ever expanded editions with extra features.
I think the current uber-geek version has reflections on the film by Robert S Macnamara (defence secretary for Kenndy and Johson during The cuban missile crisis and the Vietnam war) Despite myself - I want it. 
I can't decide if I'm being treated or cynically manipulated, however.
