I've got to agree that fancy breads (organic, wholemeal, ciabatta, etc) are definitely a no-no. By the same token I'd exclude salad, cheese and other such refinements - though 'broon sass' or ketchup is great. Other points to consider are:
*Lean (Canadian) bacon or streaky? My own preference is for streaky - cooked till crispy.
*Alternative to white sliced bread is two larger diagonally-cut slices from some large-ish white loaf. This gives a bigger sarnie.
* Naked Chef Jamie Oliver toasts this using a super-heated griddle pan with ridges, giving pleasing criss-cross patterns.
* The addition of a fried egg, yolk still soft, produces interesting effects such as yellow stuff snaking down the forearms of the trencherman.
