Unless I am very much mistaken they are being used to advertise a TV channel at moment or were up to a week ago, was it UK Gold? They were painted gold or were gold and either being ridden or rolling down a hill.

Funny you should mention this ... I've seen space hoppers quite a lot since writing this - they've been on a number of trailers on tv, and I think I spotted them in a regular ad too.
Maybe their time has come ....... again.
