A Conversation for Unfocussed Background Noise as an Insomnia Cure

noise to sleep

Yes! this works well for me also- i have a fan by my bed that sends me to sleep, or a detuned radio if that doesnt work.

Another reason it works so well is, i believe, that the 'noise' drowns out or masks any random noises that occur that would normally wake you up.

slamming car doors, a shout in the street etc...

Here, here! smiley - cheers

I always found I slept easier when my AC was on than off when I was living in TX. When I'm at my grandmother's her snoring in the other room and her tv also keep asleep... Snoring does serve a purpose apparently... smiley - biggrinsmiley - winkeye

Yes, a fan by the bed is heaven! I worked shifts for years and when I needed to sleep in the daytime the fan was the only thing that worked. Although now I am dependant on it and MUST have it....I actually wake up when there are power failures to the "quiet".smiley - winkeye

I used to have a small fan by the bed, but it didn't drown out louder noises and it also wasn't very effective in the cooling stakes eithersmiley - erm

Now i have a very big floor standing one smiley - bigeyes which is like having my own personal jet by my bedsidesmiley - magic

We get quite a lot of power cuts in my village, and also power fluctations, both of which awaken me due to the change in pitch of the fan noise!I also seem to be addicted to the sound now, and sleeping without it is hard.

I think we should begin a 'fans by the bed' appreciation society or something....

Definetely! Sign me up for the blow by the bed "FANclub" (LOL) It is the sort of thing you must need it to appreciate it! Glad those power outages wake someone else too; I was feeling a little alone there...smiley - winkeye

When I was staying at my grandmother's, she was rather frugal with the AC so during the summer I had my fan on anytime I slept. Don't ocillate it though, cause then I'd end waiting for it come around, the anticpation alone would have kept me awake, so I usually kept it directly on me.

Oscillation-Nooooo absolutely not! I never use that function. What's the point? It spends most of the time not cooling you but blowing pointlessly in the other directionsmiley - huh and yes the i couldn't sleep if it was moving all over the place eithersmiley - cross

In the winter i have it directed away from me as i am only using it for the sound not the cooling effectsmiley - magic

FANclub-now why on earth didn't i think of thatsmiley - blush

Ahh... In the winter, I'm mostly focussing on how cold everything is and how warm my blankets are, nothing gets me to sleep faster than a really, really, uber-cold day and really, really, uber-warm blankets. smiley - biggrin

Why does the subject now say why do people go to baseball games?

In the winter I just have to burrow under the covers because I have to keep my fan in the same place; outlet restrictions and all. I have never thought of turning it the other way though....is the "volume" just as good?

I'll have to try this out...........

(slowly raises hand) Umm... My idea. Bad pun... The answer is for the fans. Fans, FANclub, fans to sleep, fans cause they keep you cool. smiley - erm

smiley - smiley LOL! That is great. (I was thinking along those punny lines but wasn't sure I'd "hit" upon it.)
So are we going to expand this Fanclub to other sleep things we can't do without? A warm glass of milk, for example. Reading. Saying goodnight to the moon first. smiley - winkeye

Yeah I didn't want to include the answer, I figged people would get it. Mmmm... Warm glass of milk. I usually go for water myself, especially middle of the night, when I'm having a bout of insomnia... Saying goodnight to the moon, awwww... (tear)

My little sister used to go to bed to the jazz channel on the radio...
