A Conversation for Unfocussed Background Noise as an Insomnia Cure
White Noise

Why is it 'mistakenly' known as white noise? I've always called it white noise, and that's how I've always heard it referred to (even by professionals). Why is this a mistake, and if it is then what is 'white noise'?

"White Noise" is noise where the Sound Power Level (In Watts) is equal over all the frequency range.
Often - people - even professionals - describe any general "hiss" as White Noise, where this is normally not the case.
Interestingly you can also have "Pink Noise", where the sound power decreases by 3dB per octave with increasing frequency. Without going into this any further you can also have, Red, Orange, Green, Blue, Purple, Grey, Brown and Black noise.
