Unfocussed Background Noise as an Insomnia Cure

8 Conversations

One cure for insomnia is simple 'unfocussed background noise'1. Non-distinct repetitious random sounds can help clear the mind and induce a sleeping state.

Examples of Unfocussed Background Noise include:

  • Fans or air-conditioners
  • Computer hard-drives
  • A crackling fireplace
  • Cats purring
  • TV or radio on static

Make sure the noise is at a medium-low level so that it won't keep you awake. The wonderful thing about it is that it is something your consciousness can focus on, but your mind can only get a fuzzy grip on.

Sweet dreams!

1This is sometimes (mistakenly) known as 'white noise'.
