A Conversation for Laurence Olivier

Archie in 'The Entertainer' is an actor who just isn't quite good enough. On one occasion another actor asked Olivier how he managed to do the part so well (I believe Olivier won an award for the part). Olivier's answer was 'My dear boy, I just went out there and did the best I could.' I guess Larry didn't take himself or his profession 100% seriously all the time.

I think he probably did take it (and almost certainly himself) reasonably seriously, but the difference between actors of his generation and modern ones is you just didn't go around in public showing how wonderful you thought you were. Besides, it's far cooler to be witty than arrogant!
