A Conversation for Tin Town - the Navvies of Birchinlee
Tin Town

In Autumn last year (2007) my wife and I stayed on a campsite near Hope in Derbyshire. While there we ventured up the Derwent valley and discovered the remains of Birchenlee, the Tin Town. We also saw the two dams built by the navvies. In fact we were very lucky to arrive by the Derwent Dam while some workmen were there, and were shown inside the structure. A tunnel passes across the dam between the two towers. This is to enable workmen to get easily from one side to the other without having to go on a long journey around the valley.
What really impressed us was the quality of the workmanship. The stones used to create the dam were carved to very precise measures. Even the walls of the tunnel were fitted incredibly smoothly and tightly. The whole structure is designed to give an impressive look and should be held up as a masterpiece for all those involved in its construction.
I took some interesting photos of the dams, including one in the tunnel and will add them to this message as soon as I can work out how to.
