Here in Texas, the mandolin is thought of as a bluegrass instrument, e.g.:

Yes, the mandolin does appear in unexpected places - I think Led Zeppelin had a couple of songs with mandolin in them.

I was thinking more of the song actually entitled 'Mandolin Strum' off the Everybody Hurts single. It's an instrumental piece.
