I reckon you should work on getting a little duo/trio/whatever together & consider a nice cheap tour of Oirish pubs in France, they are crying out for anything resembling decent folk music. Email me if you're interested & maybe we could work something out...

Yes, there are Irish pubs in France! Useful for going in and asking directions.

Mandolin and guitar: a couple made in heaven. In Portugal it is guitarra http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portuguese_guitar (a mandolinish cittern) and viola (= guitar).

This site's a wee bit out of date, but gives you some idea; in most of Europe, you can hardly turn a corner without finding an Oirish Bar!
