In the army i was taught how to find north using cassiopea
you bisect both v's and project the lines outward and where the lines cross is the pole star

North is easier found from the plow. The end of the saucepan points to the north star (Polaris), and the handle points to yellow Arcturus.

From lattitudes in the fourties the plough is below the horizon half the time. Since Cassiopia is on the opposite side of the little bear use this constellation to find Polaris if the Plough has set
