A Conversation for Henry II - the 'First' King of England
Henry II's weakness

I propose that Henry was not the giant of English constitutional history as you make out but in fact was largely responsible for the ascendency of the Church's autonomy in the Angevin period. Without the murder of Becket, the Church is unlikely to have gained the ever increasing independence from State interference in investiture and clerical courts which created so much conflict in England's government until the Reformation.
