I have a friend called Martin Dwyer. He is called Bob at work. It is nothing to do with any dog product links but is a result fo the following - so pay attention.
His fellow apprentices (years ago) called him spin for a while. Go on, say it out loud "Spin Dwyer"
Then they called him Barb "Barb Dwyer"
Then when new people arrived at work they were told that his name was Barb and they thought that people were saying Bob with a mock American accent and didn't want to say it with a mock American accent and just called him Bob.
Which is how you get Bob from Martin.

I love the innocent way that some horrendous names are gained.
Slasher for the boy who took a desperate wee behind the bike sheds
Monster for the child who liked Monster Munch best of all snacks
Vicious for the child who always misspelt viscous in science
Clubber for the child who was the first to join the chess club AND the science club after school
You must have some others.
