A Conversation for An Introduction to The Beatles

Abbey Road-what's up??

I have read many, many statements online stating that Abbey Road and Sgt. Pepper's are the best albums-EVER. Granted, any album by the Beatles is top-notch, I honestly feel those are their worst two LP's. I think that Revolver and A Hard Day's Night are my favorite. They have wonderful songs, insights, etc. WHY DOES EVERYONE LOVE ABBEY ROAD???????

Yes Hard Days Night is probably so good because it was so spontaneously made. And Revolver just continued the work-in-studio freedom the band relished. They were very fortunate to have George Martin as their producer. I can't imagine most their LPs being made as good as they were without his involvement, and really the worst one was made without his involvement:Let It Be! Abbey Road is so good because they had such a sour experience with the Get Back/Let It Be sessions/film. I think they just wanted to see if they could actually work together and make a good album again. But whether they actually consciously knew it was THE last Beatles LP, I don't know.

For one thing, Abbey Road had a bit of everything on side one. Apart from the classics, 'Something', 'Here comes the sun' (including an early use of synthesisers on record), there were the more 'fun-filled' tracks reminiscent of some of the inclusions on the 'White Album'('Maxwell's Silver Hammer', 'Octopus's Garden' etc.).

The thing that does it for me is the 'Medley' - starting off with 'You never give me your money' and ending with 'Her Majesty'. It's a masterwork (well, I think so anyway), and together these snippets work well together to blend and merge to create the flow of the main piece. I love to hear every note, every beat of the track move into the next. Excellent!! Blows me away every time!

Didn't George give "Something" to Joe Cocker to record BEFORE Abbey Road? I have seen pictures in the old Beatles Monthly Book with George sitting next to Joe, and it( the photo) looked like it was maybe half a year before Abbey Road was recorded (going by George's hair and moustache). And I think he also gave "My Sweet Lord" and "All Things Must Pass" to Billy Preston to record before he himself recorded them, or at least before the ATMP LP was released! The Beatles were very generous in regards to giving other artistes songs that would have been hit records for themselves.
