The Potager
Created | Updated Feb 8, 2004
On the day when the lotus bloomed, alas, my mind was straying, and I knew it not.
My basket was empty and the flower remained unheeded.
Only now and again a sadness fell upon me, and I started up from my dream and felt a sweet trace of a strange fragrance in the south wind.
That vague sweetness made my heart ache with longing and it seemed that it was the eager breath of summer seeking for its completion.
I knew not then that it was so near, that it was mine, and that this perfect sweetness had blossomed in the depth of my own heart.
-"Gitanjali' by Rabindranath Tagore
The Potager is one of the busiest spots in The Circle. It contains dozens of well tended beds filled with herbs, vegetables and small fruits. The vegetable beds run east to west in an orderly fashion, with the herb beds located at the four corners. Only natural materials are used in the Potager. Tomatoes and pole beans climb bamboo teepees, straw and compost are used for mulch, and well-rotted manure and seaweed feed the plants.
Beds of sunflowers, millet and high bush cranberries feed the birds and extra crops are grown to share the bounty with our four-legged residents. An orchard is nearby and the grounds also contain a variety of nut trees which provide both food and shade.
Good topics for conversation while working in the Potager include but are not limited to organic gardening, recycling, global warming, the disappearance of the rain forest, extinction of both plants and animals, and the conservation of water, forests and our mineral resources.
Please feel welcome to start a conversation about any of these topics or choose one of your own.
