Anybody planning any h2g2 Community Events in southern California? Let's talk.

I live increasingly close to Pasadina, if that is close enough.

How can you live 'increasingly close' to somewhere? The only way I can think of is in a camper van! Although, having said that, with all the seismic activity in this area it is plausible that you may be getting closer to Pasadena very very slowly.

Personally, I hail from Santa Monica, although I'm really a Londoner through and through.

Hey ELUK, feels wierd to actually have a tan doesn't it? I grew up near Seattle so all this sun actully hurts my skin. But I love it anyway! Where else can you go drive to ocean, the mountains, the desert, and city all in one day? I'm not a world traveler, but I'm pretty good at geography, and I really can't think of any other place on earth like this. I'm probably wrong, and if someone can tell me where another paradise is, I'm there!

I don't know. I should have elaborated. I am a Monrovian, about 5 miles away from Pasadena.

West Los Angeles here! As far as other paradises are concerned, I think that the Hawiian(sp?) islands are fairly paradise like. Whilst there are no deserts or ski resorts per se, they seem to have that incessant reek of pleasure.

Been here two years myself. Just found out about this website while reading Salmon of Doubt. Currently renting in Westwood. Love it here, though they could do with some brew pubs.

There aren't any brewpubs in Westwood?!? It's possible the dotcommers wiped them out by raising rents too high, but now that they're gone, you'd think someone would open.

Gordon Biersch in Pasadena's Old Town is one of the originals, not too long after California passed the law allowing brewpubs. Their Ma:rchen (pretend that : is an umlaut) is sufficiently popular you can find it's brews bottled at the supermarket. You should be able to find their beer on tap in that large deli (a branch of Jerry's?) just south of the south side of UCLA. GB's pub is interesting in and of itself, you can probably Red Line-Gold Line your way there nowadays.

I should amend my initial post. There are very few DECENT brew pubs in the West LA area (Westwood brewing Co is mediocre). I don't like spending an hour or more just to get to one (Pasadena is a bit of a hike from Westwood). There are plenty of pubs that have great beer on tap, especially in Santa Monica. But I want that East coast or Pacific Northwest style of brew pub with the big stainless steel vats and the pub fare (chili, burgers, sandwhiches, chips, etc.) and comfortable booths and peanuts on the tables (and shells on the floors!).

Aha! I know what you mean, and I don't think there are any like that in LA. There are some in San Jose', where I am from, but I have never seen the like down here.

Welcome to LA! I spent two years in the Boston area and there are many things I miss about New England. Can you say Brew Pubs!?
